has it really been so long?
Mister's brother is coming for a month long visit at the end of this week and i have no where for him to stay. for our occasional guests we have a pull out couch, not the worst one i have ever slept on, but who wants to sleep in a living room for a month? so i have been working to get something cobbled together, which of course includes a disasterous trip to IKEA.
i have seen the catalouges where they show off these fabulous looking rooms and flash the ultra low price across the top, and i checked out a few pieces on the internet, so i am thinking one trip is going to solve all my problems. thanks to the vets offic i have a couple of bucks in our checking account and all i really need is a futon, a duvet cover, and a pair of curtains. this should be easy.
i head straight for the futons, and go look for the one i saw online and see it is not listed as it was at 200 dollars but 427. stunned, i try looking at the other ones and notice there is a fantastic range in price and quality. i realized the reason the price was higher than i thought it would be was because the mattress and cover are not included, only the frame. a ha. i found the cheapest one which resembled an oversized book of matches in both size and comfort and immediately began to try and justify the departure of 427 dollars. i am quite surprised at how fast i was able to do it...if i get a nicer futon we can have more visitors...a good piece of furniture is an investment...if it lasts 10 years it will have only been 42.70 a year...pleased with myself i moved on to housewares.
the curtains were all hanging in luscious rows, so i jumped right in and started pawing them, losing myself momentarily in the variety of textures. it was short lived bliss as i quickly remembered i had a mission to fulfill and my decision had to match the soft pumpkin we painted the walls. in retrospect it may not have been the easiest color to match things to but it was too late to go back now so after much flip flopping i settled on latte brown silk curtains. which ended up being the most expensive, but also out of stock. "probably for the best", my checkbook chimed in, and i grabbed the cheap unbleached canvas ones instead.
things took a turn for the worse in the duvet department, as they were all hideous and/or the wrong size. bed bath and beyond it is then...
losing my patience, i head down to the self serve bins to get my over priced futon. the boxes are larger than i had anticipated, but i quickly shoved my concerns about it fitting in the car aside in favor of struggling to get the 75 pound box on to my very wheely cart. wrestling with and inantmate object that is half my body weight was less fun than it sounds, in the end there were bruised toes, paper burns from the cardboard, and a small dent in my wheelie cart. but fuck it, it was on there, i had all my goodies and i was ready to go.
i wheel my ass up to check out and wait on line staring idly at the plexiglass booth containing the cashier. a flyer trapped behind the plastic catches my eye...the payment and return policy. i read it out of boredom and when i get to the bottom it says, "as of june 1st 2005 we will no longer be accepting personal checks."
fuck it.
the total of my items greatly exceeds my atm daily limit and i dont have a credit card. i wheel my cart to the side, too tired and frustrated to put it all back, and go home. i dont know how i am going to figure this all out, but i have six days to do it.
wish me luck!
