snow day!!!! yay!!!!

i hate the snow but i embrace the snow day, everything is cold and white outside and provides the perfect excuse to sit in bed and do nothing but watch movies and catch up on emails.

i just got a copy of party monster in the mail the other day and decided to stick it on the telly and it was sort of a shock. i had only seen the movie once before and that was at the nyc premiere, in a room with everyone who lived through it and i guess the combination of the big screen, the excitement, and the company i was in distracted me from the fact the this movie is terrible. really terrible.

the acting is awful and the story factually inaccurate in almost every regard. so being the nosy little geek that i am i had to hop onto the message boards and see what everyone else is saying about it and that is where i ran into the Sychophants. fucking little 15 year olds all over the country lionizing michael alig and taking the rendition of our lives via party monster as gospel. i sifted through posts of kids talking about what a great guy michael is, how the club kids were a welcoming haven for disaffected youth and social outcasts, that we didnt do that much drugs, and best of all that when micheal gets out in 2006 that the club kids will rise again!

what a load of crap. i detest this sanitized version of events, and i find myself uncaracteristicly infuriated. it feels like someone has stolen a little bit of my history and rewritten it. now i know thats a little over dramatic, i said i felt it, not that i believed it, but this myth IS floating around out there in the world and it's supremely annoying.

the initial draw for being a club kid was the fun, obviously, but that isnt what kept me for 5 years. it was the entropy. every club kid carried around their own complete drama, the ghosts of rejection and small towns we were all trying to escape. we gaurded our birth names like we were rumplestiltskin and walked around like we were sprung fully formed from our makeup boxes as the incredible creatures we appeared to be. it worked for awhile too...but those geeky shadow selves were always nipping at our platform heels. more parties, more coture, more hair dye, more make up, more drugs...and then some more drugs. oh, well, and maybe a little more.

i said MORE damn it!

the nights got later, until they were really mornings of the 6, 7, and 8 am variety. everyones dermablend would crack and the queens would have to make quick escapes to hide their five o'clock shadows from view. we all had to do things in our lives we never thought we would have to in order to make ends meet. desperation was in the air and the casual bitchiness previosuly used for dramatic effect got a lot nastier. tensions built steadily until you thought someone might get killed. and then someone did.

i cant say i was really surprised, but i will admit with some shame at being relieved because i fear that if it had continued to go on we would have all been dead. a baseless fear because it never could have happened that way, history tells us otherwise. scenes of intense dynamics always have a dynamic end. the factory ended because warhol got shot, 54 closed because of a tax raid, and we were finished because michael killed angel.

there are aspects i miss occasionally, but mostly i wouldnt want to go back. the future is so much more interesting and besides, it goes against the spirit of being a club kid. it was all about what is new, what is the next big thing, and if these little brats were smart they would realize that and start their own scene, create a look we have never seen, do their own thing. remember you can lure them with the superficial and hit them with the profound, or at the very least the unexpected, just dont be a boring little sycophant parrot. its tired.
