so as you know, last week my computer was hit by lightening again and the modem was completely blown. i took it into the shop where they informed me i had a minimum 5 day wait before they could return it. i went into near panic mode hearing that, thinking mostly of all of the projects i had due, all of which were locked on this computer and inaccessible any other way, but also thinking of my ridiculous dependence on my computer in general. the thought of not having it for so long nearly gave me an anxiety attack on the spot.
we do have another computer in the house but it's a Pee Cee...*shudder* and i don't like to even go near it. i freely admit i am a Mac snob, i love the big clean whiteness of it, i love the ease of all of the features, and i love itunes more than life itself. sitting cross legged on the corner of my bed with my Mac humming and my itunes running is about the most comforting position i can think to be in.
on the other hand our Pee Cee is out in the living room in the area technically known as the BigMan's office. office should be regarded as a loose term because it is really more like an avalanche of paper with a computer in the middle, its so messy that sitting there even my thoughts get crowded. Mister doesn't seem to mind so much as i do so he uses it when the BigMan goes out for the night. usually we while away our evening hours on separate computers in separate rooms until we meet back up in the bedroom around ten.
this might sound like a lonely way to spend the night with your spouse, but you have to remember we work and live together 24/7 so a couple of hours apart in the evening isn't such a bad thing...but our tenuous balance was thrown when the Mac left, suddenly i was rattling around the house with nothing to do, passing by Mister in the office, giving him dirty looks as i made continuos laps past him to the kitchen. i didn't really want anything in the kitchen, i just wanted to give him dirty looks, if i couldn't be on a computer plugged into the world i didn't think it was fair that he should be either...eventually we did the only thing a married couple can do when faced with having to spend huge amounts of time together without the usual distractions, we left.
as luck would have it some crazy rare bird landed in martha's vineyard, a red footed falcon, which has never been seen in the americas before. this bird's visitation is so unprecedented it made the front page of the new york times. the vineyard is only a few hours drive from us so we rang up my auntie in cape cod, hopped in the car and drove up the coast. Mister was in an apoplectic state the whole trip up, terrified he would miss the bird (which would be the equivalent of political suicide in the bird world), but he shouldn't have worried. we got out to the airfield where it is living and it was obvious from a half a mile away it was still there by the rows of cars and people lined up the side of the landing field. we were able to see the bird right away and even though i am not into birds at all even i have to admit it was pretty amazing. it was a big gorgeous bird and he would shoot up into the air and hover over one spot for a long time like a hummingbird before diving to the earth to snatch up a bug for a snack. i thought he had the right idea so i snacked on a big plate of french fries till i made myself a little ill and had to sit down on the grass until it was time to go.
once the bird was seen and Mister was able to relax we had a really nice time. i fed seagulls by hand on the ferry home. they flew along side the moving boat while i held potato chips high in the air and they swooped down and took them from my fingers. then we met up with my auntie and had a nice dinner with her while i learned more family gossip. my cousin eric the sociopath is in jail, where we always knew he would end up, due to a taste for crystal meth. she also told me fascinating stories about her step mother, my great grandmother, who apparently was something of a floozie. my great grandfather was quite proud of her conquests and would brag about them to anyone who would listen. my auntie said if he had lived long enough he would have written a book about her he loved her so much. i was about 4 when i knew them so i have no recollection of this side of things, i only remember getting some nice presents in the mail from england on my birthday and christmas. isn't it funny the things you learn about people when you are all grown up?
by the time we came home my computer was fixed and wouldn't you know that by then i didn't even miss it anymore.
