today mister was horrified to find out that i have no idea why we celebrate the 4th of july. i know it has something to do with the revolutionary war, but beyond that i couldn't get any more specific. it is most likely a combination of lack of effort to remember and lack of interest in holidays and american history in general. i have a finite amount of space on my mental hard drive for trivial information and those sort of things just don't make the cut...

however, not knowing the history of a holiday has never diminished my enthusiasm for them. holloween obviously takes top place in my heart, but the fourth isn't too far down the totem pole. how can you argue with summer weather, loads of food, and fireworks? it's simple, you can't.

Mister and i will be attending a party on a rooftop in brooklyn. its a pot luck sort of thing and i have elected to bring my much sought after cherry crisp. in the spirit of whatever sentiment it is that spurs us to celebrate this holiday where we like to eat and blow things up, i have decided to share my previously well guarded super secret recipe:

bunnie's cherry crisp

1 rectangular cake pan 13 x 9 x 2 (disposable foil is easiest)

preheat oven to 400

filling:
3 cans of dark sweet cherries
3 cans of red sour cherries
1 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 cup flour

drain cherries, toss with all remaining ingredients until completely coated in the cake pan, and set aside.

topping:
4 cups dry oatmeal
3 cups all purpose flour
3 cups light brown sugar
4 teaspoons cinnamon
4 teaspoons salt

4 sticks (1 lb) melted butter

mix dry ingredients thoroughly and then slowly stir in the melted butter. work butter through until everything is mixed into a paste.

take half of the topping and fold it into the cherries getting a good mix, but be careful not to over blend. spread evenly in the pan and then cover with the remainder of the topping. distribute the topping so as to cover all of the cherries. bake for 30 - 40 minutes depending on your oven, let stand at least 20 minutes before serving.

the Librarian found a fantastic article on some of what makes new jersey, and it's residents so special:

you have to register to read it but it only takes a second. or you can try this, here's a site where you can pick up usernames/passwords to bypass silly

other blogs you may want to check out:

a reader of mine in austrailia recently started his own blog. he sent me the link when it was brand spanking new, but i wanted to wait till he found his wings a little. i particularly like the "this day in history" segment attached to each post:

here is my friend buba henson. bubba and i met here in connecticut a couple of years ago and he has been an outstanding friend and unflinching support to me, even when my support of myself was doing much flinching. it doesnt hurt that he is riot to read either. i love you bubba, and more, now i love your blog too:

here is my last reccomendation for the day...apparently this is the blog for a pornstar of some note. i haven't figured out who she is (i also havent tried very hard) but she seems to be working out her very interesting memoirs via blog. get in on the ground floor for this one people, and dont forget to read them in order. by the way, i feel i should point out that she is another new jersey native like myself, what is it about growing up in that place that drives some of us to do anything just to get the fuck out of there, and not just out but out in a spectaular fashion? there is a reason why more celebrities come out of jersey than any other state in the us, but maybe she can explain it better than i can:

enjoy!

there is a word i love: resistentialism, the theory that inanimate objects demonstrate hostile behavior towards us. ok, well, i dont love it when it is actually occurring, but i do love having the right word to apply to a situation. today was a resistential kind of day, dishwashers, faucets, computers and most notably my car all conspired against me.

the dishwasher no longer technically washes anything, what it does do is spray little bits of food all over everything. it happens even when we rinse the plates first so i have no idea where it's coming from and i kind of don't want to think about it too much. the faucets have decided to stop operating at max pressure as well, now when we want to fill anything we have to wait while a little pee like stream trickles to fill it. so forget washing dishes that way either, you'll be there all year. the computer we bought off ebay doesn't work. of course that problem could have been easily avoided if the BigMan had just parted with 200 dollars more for a new one. that's what you get for being cheap...but none of it bothered me that much because i found a tibetan retreat in my town (who knew?) set on 100 gorgeous acres. visiting monks teach yoga and all kinds of squirrely Buddhist stuff and i was all set to go to my first class. so i pack up my yoga mat and my put my little sequined slippers on and head out of my driveway. i get to the bottom of my hill and see that i need some gas so i pop into the station for a fill up. i get back in the car and turn the ignition. nothing happens. the lights flicker on but the ignition doesn't catch. i try again. still nothing. i look around and check every god damned thing i could possibly think of and cant find anything wrong.

i couldn't believe it. i started to giggle almost uncontrollably, not because i was particularly happy about my car dying, but because the exact same thing happened in the exact same place two weeks previous. i was even at the same pump. i felt like i was caught in some ridiculous time loop, ok i admit it i was stoned too, but still, it was surreal. i got the attendant, one of the boys who is almost always working there, and asked him to come try and start my car. i wanted to make sure i wasn't being stupid and overlooking something simple. he tried but no luck, so we pushed it over to the same spot we pushed it over to the time before and i had to walk home back up the hill. i must have looked like a total plonker with my flowered pajamas and rolled up yoga mat.

i wasn't even slightly upset though, if anything i was really grateful. at least it died at the bottom of my hill and not out at some Buddhist retreat in the middle of nowhere. i had forgotten my cell phone (as always) and the Mister doesn't drive anyway. i would have been stuck. i was even more grateful it didn't happen yesterday.

Mister and i had a gilligans isle-esqe experience this weekend. saturday we were busy with the usual saturday crap but sunday is always my Day Of Email. he knows this and so usually asks me to drop him somewhere for hardcore bird action. yesterday i made the mistake of offering to drive him to a somewhat obscure state park over the ny border. big big mistake. it was only an hour away, but the travel gods weren't with us and what should have been a 3 hour tour turned into a 9 hour nightmare. couldn't find the park until about an hour before we were supposed to head home and then got lost on the way back...Mister and i don't fight too much but the one thing guaranteed to send us over the edge is a car and the involvement of a map. is there a couple in the world who can resist the red waving flag of a map? i don't think so...it didn't help that we didnt have the right map either. we got home but we put about 300 miles on the car in the process. naturally we had to torment ourselves by looking at the correct map when we got home to see how far we had missed the mark. we charted our course and it was an embarrassing series of near misses and wrong turns. so many times if we had just gone left instead of right or vice versa we would have shaved hours off our time...can you imagine if the car had chosen to die during that? ooooh noooo...i don't even want to contemplate it. i am thankful the car was polite enough to die within walking distance of home, even if it is all up hill.
