not much to report on these last few days.
my back teeth and a sinus infection formed and evil alliance and attmpted to take me down this week...they got me in bed for two days but eventually i prevailed. not much more to the story than that really.
post recovery i felt ready to go back to tackling the mess that is to be my garden. at this point, and most likely for the rest of the summer it is going to be strictly an excavation job, removal of huge piles of accumulated trash, towing the non working cars out of here (we now have 5 people, 5! they breed like fucking rabbits i swear), and removal of pernicious vines, but i thought we had made excellent headway into it and perhaps it wasnt going to be so bad after all...i should know by now that even thinking such thoughts is an invitation to disaster, and yesterday was no exception. i started what i thought was going to be a simple weeding project around the rocks of my firepit and it all started easy enough, till i looked a little further and spotted some poison ivy. i thought, "thats no good, let me just get rid of that..." so i put on my rubber gloves and pulled it up, as i pulled it just kept going...and going...and going.
we are fucking infested with this shit.
i dont know where it came from, because i dont remember seeing much of it the years before, but it is spreading like crazy and if i dont get a handle on it now we will be over run by spring next year. there are only 2 ways to get rid of the stuff, one is hardcore herbicides, or ripping it up by hand. herbicides are poison by definition and there is no way i am going that route, not after all the effort i have put into going holisitc/organic, it would completely defeat the purpose. so it looks like it is time to break out the pick ax and start tearing it all apart and starting fresh.
as a task it isnt so awful, just a lot of work, but the whole event is colored with heavy anxiety for me...when i was little i was highly allergic to poison ivy...i had multiple trips to the emergency room over it, i was one of those kids who could catch it in the wind...one time it was so bad i had it in my throat. another time it formed blisters between my fingers that grew so large they needed to be lanced. ugh...just thinking about it makes me itch. the whole time i am out there working i have this urge to scratch, coupled with a paranoia of touching myself for fear of spreading anything i may have already touched, all of this while standing ankle high of the stuff. almost too absurd for words...(but you know i had to give it a whirl anyway).
does anyone know where to get one of those hazmat suits on the cheap?
